BUFFS Club captain Gail Langley sounded ecstatic ahead of her fifth Washie 100 attempt today.
Although not fancying her chances of winning, the Abbotsford resident has set her own personal agenda for the race.
“I know I will not win but I have set myself a certain time to finish the race.”
Although it’s seen as a “race from hell” the Washie looks tailormade for daredevils, but Langley says anyone can take part.
Having raced four Washies, Langley will be using her past experience to her benefit.
“The
first 40km are hard and nerve-wracking, approaching 80km your emotions
are swinging and it’s difficult…after that you are just running and
looking forward to finishing the race,” she said.
She hinted today’s race would be her last, but she is willing to assist other runners next year.
“I started running the Washie in 2002, with only a two-year break in between, I have completed four Washies.
“I believe I have done my part, I might come back next year to help other people out,” she said.
Langley however will retire happy in the knowledge she has made her mark on the race.
“I
stand corrected but I believe I’m the only runner from the Border in my
category to have achieve that (four Washies), I couldn’t have asked for
more, it is fulfilling to retire knowing that.” she said.
